Last week in class, the students went on a field trip to the University of Washington’s farm. Not only did I not know where this farm was located on campus, I had no idea that this campus even had a farm. As the class of Anthropology of Food arrived at the UW Farm, I was amazed at what the land was producing. The Medicinal Herb Garden Coordinator and Manager of the UW Student Farm, Keith Possee, gave us a tour of the cultivated land.
I was so surprised at all of the amazing foods that the UW farm was producing such as tomatoes, coffee beans, melons, herbs, flowers, and it even had a gated fenced area for chickens. Keith said that the Washington climate makes it easy to be able to grow many things because the weather is so mild. This UW Farm was very inspirational to me because no one would have thought that Keith would have been able to produce such a great farm on the campus of the UW but with hard determination, he has been able to make this farm into something unbelievable.
Keith gave me encouragement and strength to stand up for what I believe in. Many people probably doubted Keith and his idea of this farm but he knew that he had to create this farm and so he followed his beliefs of what he thought would be good for the environment and for the University.
